SINGAPORE AMATEUR BOXING ASSOCIATION

SELECTION POLICY FOR YOUTH OLYMPIC GAMES 2010

The Singapore Amateur Boxing Association will select the team to represent Singapore at the Youth Olympic Games 2010 according to the following process :

ELIGIBILITY

In order to be eligible for selection the athlete must :

 be a Singapore Citizen

 be a member of the Singapore Amateur Boxing Association ( through affiliated clubs)

 born between 01/01/1992 and 31/12/1993

SELECTION POLICY

Expectations will be written down and clearly conveyed to athlete and their coaches and family members if need be so that all concerned will know the exact standards and criteria to be met.

After the last National Youth Championships held on January 10 and 11 2009 a total of 13 boxers were short listed to form a National Youth Squad. As these Youth boxers come from different clubs, National training is conducted on every Saturday afternoons from 16:00 to 18:30. The training frequency will increase by September 2009.

Selection criterias for participation in YOG will be based on the following :

 The weight categories ( man only )

48kg; 51kg; 54kg; 57kg; 60kg; 64kg; 69kg; 75kg; 81kg; 91kg; +91kg

 The boxers commitment to training. The boxers must attain minimum attendance of 80%

 The Selection Panel will short list four (4) boxers, through SABAs point system, who will represent Singapore at international tournaments/training camps. From there only, two boxers will represent Singapore at the YOG ( host country quota ) Final selection process will be on the basis of each boxer’s total point achievements in local and international competitions. Should there be a tie in the points, the selection committee will have the final say.

 

 SABA’s Point System : For each tournament below, Boxers will be awarded points at the end of tournament. They are as below :

o Podium Finish – Gold 6 points, Silver 5 points, Bronze 4 points

o Win – 3 points

o Tie – 2 points

o Lose – 1 point

o Walkover / No participation – 0 point

 Certain competitions will carry more weightage depending on whether the competition is National, regional or international. National carrying the least weightage and International carrying the most.

 Continuous evaluation shall be base on participations and performances in local/overseas training and in the National and Overseas Championships. Especially in the highlighted competitions in Appendix 1.

 The boxers compliance with AIBA and WADA anti-doping requirements

 The boxers behavior/discipline in training/competition ( dress appropriately, avoid vulgarities, treat all officials and coaches with respect at all times )

 The boxers have to undergo medical clearance

 The boxers should have a sound understanding of AIBA Rules and Regulations

 Signing of the National Team Member Code of Conduct ( APPENDIX II)

SELECTION PANEL GUIDELINES

Selectors will adhere to the guidelines by:

(i) Ensuring that appropriate and desirable objectives and criteria are laid down and carried through

(ii) Communicating criteria and ensuring sure that they are understood to all

(iii)Acting honestly, fairly and without bias

(iv) Ensuring that athletes are kept informed throughout the selection process

(v) Following the sport’s internal rule or guidelines

(vi) Ignoring extraneous or irrelevant considerations or erroneous information

(vii) The sport will ensure that information is not leaked outside of those involved in the selections.

(viii) Hide matters from the athlete

(ix) Change the rules midstream

(x) Apply inappropriate criteria

(xi) Do anything else outside the reasonable expectations of the athlete

COMMUNICATION OF RESULTS AND APPEALS PROCESS

Results will be communicated to all concerned boxers in writing by the selectors.

With the directives from SSC the media will only be informed after the boxers have been informed.

Every non selected boxers have the right to lodge an appeal submitted within seven ( 7 ) days upon release of the selection. The right of appeal is considered lapsed after the 8th day. Payment of S$ 100 by way of cheque made payable to SINGAPORE AMATEUR BOXING ASSOCIATION will accompany each appeal and any appeal need to be submitted directly to the Appeals Coordinator. The appeals process will not be a re-selection process but rather a process to inquire whether the decision reached by the selectors was properly made. If the selection process is found to be incorrect, it will be referred back to the selectors for a re-selection.

APPENDIX II

NATIONAL TEAM MEMBER CODE OF CONDUCT

National team members, representing SABA shall adhere to the following and are required to sign the Code of Conduct:

1. Good Behaviour

1,1 I shall behave in a dignified manner at all times and shall not do anything that

may bring the SABA, the Team or me into disrepute.

1.2 I shall respect the spirit of fair play and non-violence towards all other

competitors.

1.3 I shall abide by the team rules laid down by the Team Manager and Coach

and all directions given by them.

1.4 I shall respect the authority of the Team Manager and Coach and all

tournament officials.

1.5 I shall be professional throughout and accept responsibility for my actions.

1.6 I shall respect the laws and customs of places I visit.

1.7 I shall not misuse funds or property belonging to another party.

2. Anti Doping

2.1 I shall not use substances or procedures prohibited by AIBA SABA.

2.2 I shall at the request of representatives of the Singapore Sports Drug

Agency, World Anti Doping Authority, or tournament drug testing

personnel, submit to drug testing procedures without complaint.

3. Team Selection

I agree to accept all of the selection decisions without dissent.

4. Coaching

4.1 I acknowledge that the coach(es) appointed by SABA is/are the sole coach(es)

for all members of the Team.

4,2 I acknowledge that any delegation of coaching duties, due to their unavailibity,

is at their sole and unfetted discretion.

4.3 I agree to accept coaching from coaches appointed by SABA, or from anyone to

whom they delegate the task, in all of my bouts.

4.4 I agree to follow their instructions in all practice and warm up sessions.

5. Media Coverage

5.1 I acknowledge that as a participant at international events I may be filmed or photographed by accreditation media organizations. I shall respect and comply with all

media requests issued through the Team Manager.

6. Confidentiality

I shall respect the confidentiality of non-public information that comes to me in the course of representing SABA.

7. Unsuitable Behaviour

The following provides examples of actions that would be considered a breach of the SABA Athlete Code of Conduct. This list is not exhaustive, but is intended to provide a guideline to what is considered unsuitable behaviour.

7.1 ‘Sledging’ other athletes, officials or event organizers. Sledging is defined

as a statement, which is deemed to denigrate and/or intimidate another

person.

7.2 Publicly dissenting the decision of the Team Manager or Team Coach(es)

7.3 Missing or arriving late for team meetings, curfews and travel arrangements.

7.4 Inappropriate use of alcohol.

7.5 Creating a public disturbance, or acting in a way that becomes a public nuisance

7.6 Causing damage to another person’s property.

7.7 The use or encouragement of drugs and banned substances to enhance or inhibit performance.

7.8 Statements that are deemed to denigrate the group that an individual is representing

7.9 Harassment of any form.

8. The SABA’s Athlete Code of Ethics

All SABA boxers shall :

8.1 Treat opponents with respect.

8.2 Box hard within the rules.

8.3 Exercise self-control at all times.

8.4 Respect the decisions of officials without gesture or argument.

8.5 Show good sportsmanship by winning with humility and losing with dignity.

8.6 Show that it is a privilege to represent their club, region and nation.

8.7 Recognize and applaud honesty and wholeheartedly the efforts of team-mates or opponents regardless of ability, cultural background, or religion.
